La Costa Mexicana Liberty Square, Missouri 816 883 8355

Everything comes with consomé you are meant to dip.

La Costa Mexicana has been cooking on the Liberty Square since 2015. Come in for the birria quesatacos, stay because someone brought a second basket of chips without being asked.

The room

Number 5 East Kansas Street is a brick front on the old side of the Liberty Square, close enough to the courthouse that people walk over from it. Inside it is warm and busy at six o'clock and quiet by two, which is the hour the regulars pick.

Tables seat two through ten. Larger parties are fine with a call ahead, and the bar takes walk-ups when the dining room is full. Kids get their own menu, and chicken tenders are on it, which every parent in Clay County already knows.

Parking: street spaces around the Square and the public lots behind it. Exact party size limits and any reservation policy: to be confirmed with the restaurant.

The kitchen

A short reading of the menu, written for this proposal. The full card runs longer and would be set from the restaurant's own list.

From the griddle

Birria quesatacos
Four tacos, birria style beef and Monterey cheese, cilantro and onion, consomé on the side for dipping. Mexican rice and beans.
Tacos de barbacoa
Slow cooked beef, onion and cilantro, corn tortillas.
Tacos de carne asada
Grilled steak, chopped, the plainest thing on the menu and one of the best.

Enchiladas

Trio enchiladas
Three enchiladas, three fillings, three sauces on one plate.
Espinaca enchiladas
Spinach and cheese, for the table's vegetarian who is tired of being asked.

From the coast

Camarones a la diabla
Shrimp in a red chile sauce that means what the name says.
Camarones La Costa
The house shrimp plate the restaurant is named for.
Pollo al mar
Grilled chicken under shrimp and cheese sauce.
Grilled tilapia
Whole fillet, rice, and vegetables.

To start and to finish

Chips and salsa
Brought to the table. The salsa is the reason people ask for more chips.
Desserts
Made in house. Ask what there is that night.

Prices are not printed here because this is a design proposal, not the menu. Every price, portion, and current special would come from the restaurant before this page goes live.

The bar

Full bar, and the margarita is the reason most people are standing at it. You name the flavor and it gets built that way, on the rocks or frozen. There are cocktails and shots besides, and a happy hour Monday through Thursday.

Margaritas
Flavors to order, rocks or frozen
Happy hour
Monday through Thursday. Times: to be confirmed
Specials
A separate weekday card, Monday through Thursday
Also poured
Cocktails, shots, beer, and soft drinks
A round custard flan turned out onto a white plate with caramel running off it
Plate 04 Sample photograph. House desserts change, so this slot stays flexible.

Desserts are made here

Not brought in frozen and not the same three every night. Ask the server what came out of the kitchen that day, and order it before the table decides it is too full, because that decision is always wrong.

Takeout and online ordering run through liberty.lacostamexicanamo.com, and the kitchen packs the consomé separately so the tortillas survive the drive.
